What should programme managers actually track?

Looking Beyond Raw Attendance

Attendance is essential, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. A participant may attend every lecture while struggling with practical assignments or falling behind on key milestones.

To understand how a cohort is really performing, programme managers need to look at participation patterns, assignment progress and facilitator feedback alongside attendance figures.

“Attendance tells you who showed up. Progress tracking tells you who is actually learning and keeping up with the course.”

The Indicators That Matter Most

For practical programme coordination, four areas give teams the clearest picture:

  • —Session Attendance: Quick, reliable records of who attended each live lecture or practical workshop.
  • —Milestone Progress: Which participants have submitted assignments, and how quickly facilitators are reviewing them.
  • —Facilitator Capacity: Ensuring instructors and teaching assistants have balanced cohort groups so every learner gets support.
  • —Clear Final Summaries: Accurate completion records that can be shared with leadership, academic boards or funders.

Early Support Instead of End-of-Course Surprises

When progress is monitored consistently, teams can step in early. Instead of discovering at the end of a programme that several participants missed key milestones, managers can arrange check-ins while the course is still underway.
